Luqman Hakim, whose words of Hikmat are most remembered among learned men, advised his son:

"O my son! Do not acquire knowledge to pride yourself among the learned, nor to tyrannize the ignorant nor to decorate yourself at public gatherings. And neither should you give up the seeking of knowledge out of disinterest or having a desire to remain ignorant.”

"O my son! Select your companions with caution. When you see people involved in the discussion of Allah join them; for there you will benefit by your knowledge and they will enrich you in knowledge further still ."
